You've got mail...twice. I’m off to see a customer tomorrow, not unusual you might think it’s my job, but relevant as I’ve been invited to talk to them about replacing their Notes email infrastructure with Exchange. As an ex Lotus employee and someone who’s still a fan of Notes the conversation will undoubtedly turn to my opinion of IBM’s messaging and collaboration strategy and what it means for Notes/Domino. Now if truth be told I shouldn’t even be having this conversation, but as this organisation is being told two things by IBM they’ve asked for a second, or should that be third opinion. One bit of IBM wants them to migrate to the latest version of Lotus Notes and another wants them to migrate to Lotus Workplace; but as they can’t understand why IBM has two different messaging platforms and no one at IBM can explain either I’ll have to give my unbiased thoughts. Oh and they don’t understand why there’s two versions of Sametime either. History shows that if a software company sells two products that do the same thing it has to at some point get off the fence and back one. It’s odd as it doesn’t seem to matter with other products, BMW for example can make the X3 and the X5 and people don’t seem to worry. However after five minutes in the software industry you discover that the rules everyone else plays by don’t apply. If you’re looking at your screen with a blank expression have a read of Merrill R Chapman’s book ‘In Search of Stupidly’ and you’ll understand. You might get a way with dual strategy with a more esoteric or niche product but when it comes to things like email one has to win. Place your bets….

Tsk Tone, you know I cannot resist this type of flame bait. "...and no one at IBM can explain it either...". You say you are going to be unbiased then come out with outrageous FUD like that! There are plenty of IBMers who can articulate our vision for Messaging and Collaboration. Perhaps you should have gone to Lotusphere. You can also read the copious analysts reports and commentary which explains our strategy and praise it as being superior to that of Microsoft. Are you going to trot out the "Notes is Dead" and "IBM is forcing it's customer to Websphere" to fully lose your credibility?.

Perhaps I will go and see the customer after you and point out what a mess MS has made of collaboration and how dodgy their offering are when placed under serious scrutiny. Promising SQL based Exchange for 4 years and then dropping it. Recommending Office as the front end of a Portal?! Groove overlapping Sharepoint - is it going to be GroovePoint next year?

And as you encourage them to downgrade to Exchange, will you also point out the other 13 MS products required to duplicate Domino?

I freely admit that Microsoft has done a good job with Outlook their virus riddled eMail client. It is pretty and easy to use. But then the MS Office team now supports Outlook working with a secure Lotus Domino back end. Perhaps they know something you don't?

I admit it was a bit flame bait. And also true to form you had your usual misinformed pop at MS without answering the question... :o)

"Groove overlapping Sharepoint" this is ill informed. There have been a few releases of Groove since the first version, Groove actually does some cool things for Sharepoint, offline services anyone?

Don't worry I've slapped the wrists of anyone who says 'Notes is dead'. Surprisingly I hear it more from customers than I do from the MS chaps. Your message sadly isn't getting through and slapping customers is not such a good idea. :o)

As for the choice argument I don't agree. Choice with software always leads to confusion as one will always be end up in competition with each other. There's huge potential cross over between Domino and Workplace, and if I rememebr IBM well enough that's deliberate. The situation with Sametime just makes my case in spades...

As for Groove, lets wait and see eh? After all Ray Ozzie created Notes so I think he's a bright cookie!
